Mary
Cecil Allen
|
Dear
Ewa, I am working on a publication for Melbourne University Press together with the archivist of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. We are seeking information about Mary Cecil Allen (1893-1962). She organised the 1931 Roerich Museum exhibition of Australian art, the first exhibition of Australian art held in the United States. There appears to be little documentation of this in Australia, although McCullough's Encyclopedia (1984) notes the exhibition included 100 paintings, and Mary Allen lectured on these in 14 American cities. I believe she was known in the US as Cecil Allen. She was a reknowned lecturer. She died (April 7, 1962) in Provincetown, where she lived for some time, and is buried there. Have you any details about Mary Cecil Allen which we may possibly be able to have? We hope you may have some detail on her (perhaps a press clipping or obituary following her death). We would very much appreciate your help with this. Eileen Chanin 585 Grosvenor Place Sydney NSW 1220 Australia Phone 612 93265110 Fax 612 93264778
