Paul Bowen
(1951-
Portrait by Norma Holt. |
Bowen, who came from Wales as a fellow at the Fine
Arts Work Center in Provincetown, derives his mari-time images from
his Welsh heritage (fishermens tar-covered skin coracles with their
slender wooden frames) and his Cape Cod present (he has been resident
in Provincetown from 1977 to 2005) with lapstrake dories, fishing boats and
boxes. He has melded the essences of these two places into his sculptural
cosmos--using the finely planed slats of old fish crates in a conjunction
with tar and simple bindings to create forms that are as personal as they
are redolent of the sea, fishermen or the rivers of his native heath.
