David Ericson Hello friends: I am researching a set of murals by David Ericson (1869-1946), documented as painted in Provincetown, around 1922-1924, for the Hibbing High School in Hibbing, Minnesota. I wonder if you may have any information about his life and work in Provincetown.

Ericson (born Axel David Ericson in Sweden) lived for much of his life in Duluth, Minnesota, and the Tweed Museum of Art at the University of Minnesota-Duluth is presenting a retrospective of his work plus a book on the artist. An earlier catalog published by the Tweed in 1963 indicates that Ericson lived briefly in Provincetown in 1916; then returned in 1919 to Provincetown where he and his wife Susan bought a home. They remained there until 1924 when they moved to Europe (with the $9,000 he made from the Hibbing commission). Articles in the Duluth and Hibbing newspapers and in the International Studio magazine (February 1924) discuss his painting the 3 x 5 foot panels in Provincetown, and the Intl Studio also described the Ericsons' "center of cultured sociability" at their year-round Provincetown home.

Do you have any information in your registry on Ericson in Provincetown? I am interested in anything that might help flesh out the information above. And if there are other repositories in town that I should contact, I would appreciate your suggestions. I have tried the PAAM but got only a rather curt reply listing standard artist reference books; I am waiting for a reply from the Public Library. Given Provincetown's eminence in American art history, I can't help but think there would be some documentary trace of Ericson there if the period articles I mention are correct. I would really appreciate any help you can provide. Also, if you would like a photocopy of the International Studio article for your registry files, I will be happy to send it to you.

Thank you for your assistance.
