John Choly

John Choly

Almost 25 years ago, I studied with a professional watercolor artist. I learned and developed traditional techniques. Over time I began to develop my own style. An impressionistic look started happening and some of my paintings even appeared like oils.

I began to add gouache and acrylic to my work. Three-dimensional stuff started happening. I started painting on wood, even adding house paint.

It is just within the past five years that I have become clearer of what has been happening in my creative process. I have learned some rules, broken them and am now making my own. I am finding my own true sense of artist. My newest works of art represent this growth and expansion.

Inspired by the Abstract Expressionists, I am painting/creating from a deeper more inner place. My art is now like my lover. Most of the pieces are paintings on wood with acrylic and mixed media. The work can be described as raw, exposed, vulnerable and even down and dirty.

My art journey and self-journey are becoming parallel. I have come to realize that creating oneís own life is just as important as creating the actual art itself. They can be one.

Someone recently said, "Choly paints his soul."
