Lois Griffel

I have been passionate about art for as long as I can remember.

After college, I taught art in public schools but soon felt the need to concentrate on my painting obsession. I began studying classical painting at the New York Art Students League with great artists who included Ray Kinstler, Burton Silverman and Harvey Dinnerstein.

This led me to Provincetown where I became a sketch-portrait artist. For 10 summers, I painted five or six portraits a day in pastel, seven days a week. This intense training greatly enhanced my painting and communication skills.

I moved to Provincetown in 1975 and became close friends with Henry Hensche. During the winters I watched him paint his beautiful north light still lifes while enjoying long discussions about art and painting. His was the greatest influence on my painting, which now combines my classical background with the color of the Impressionists.

After becoming director of the Cape Cod School of Art I wanted to expand upon the color principles of my predecessors. I developed specific lessons designed to make the learning process easier and more understandable. These exercises became the foundation of my book, Painting the Impressionist Landscape. Published by Watson-Guptill Publications in New York, it is now in its second hardcover printing and has been translated into Chinese.

I am working on a second book for Watson-Guptill, titled Painting Impressionist Color. It will show how Impressionist color can be applied to any painting style, approach or medium. Along with at least 12 demos, it will include dozens of paintings by many plein air artists.

Unfortunately, the old barn that housed the school is closed, but there is a silver lining. Instead of inviting you to join me on Cape Cod, I have been traveling to your hometowns to bring the color theory to you.

Fortunately, there is a silver lining. Instead of inviting you to join me on Cape Cod, I have been traveling to your hometowns to bring the color theory to you.
